As for finding the truth in media the viewer has the greatest responsibility for finding the truth behind these important stories. One technique that is easy to use is comparing various news sources. News stations such as ABC, CBS, and NBC all contain the same political veiws on the democratic side whereas, Fox news is known to be the libertarian network on the conservative right side. Comparing these networks with different political views can provide various facts and opinions for the viewer to find the truth behind the story. The E in the smell test stands for evidence as in are the sources they used to make claims about a topic reliable. Evidence for any story is important because if the source is not presenting sufficient proof for a generalization made towards someone or something then how can one know if that is actually what happened. If there is not a trustworthy source behind the story then the evidence behind it is not going to be reliable for someone to believe and trust. As for the first L in the smell test it stands for logic which means does the evidence logically support the claims being made. John McManus the author of Seeking the Truth in Journalism writes “Always ask if there are alternative explanations of the same evidence that are just as compelling.” The last L in the smell test is asking what is left out to know if there has been any part of the truth conveniently taken out. For the viewer this is extremely important so that way he/she does not settle on what they believe is the truth. The last three steps in the smell test are just as important as the first two and all together create a thorough examination
