It is often argued that the existence of a democratic society necessitates the existence of information outlets whose duty is to provide the populace with authentic, unbiased and relevant material. Media outlets are thus the most pivotal institutions within society. The obligation of the modern media and its journalists to perform sufficiently as the "fourth estate of democracy" - that is, the vital pillar in maintaining social equality - arguably stopped being fulfilled when media became privately owned. In recent years, rhetoric has triumphed over reality and the general public seem to remain unaware. Owned by media monopolist Rupert Murdoch, popular newspaper "The Courier Mail" is perhaps one of the most biased outlets of all popular newspapers.
The media is a major source of information for voters. Voters depend on the media to make their decision on who to support and vote for. As much trouble as the media causes, they play a major role in our political system. The American President accurately depicts the political process.
At a glance you might say that it is a place. Place type of communication is when people are brought together by geographic boundaries. Interest communication is when people who share the same interest or are passionate about similar topics. Last but not least, action communication is when a group or groups of people are trying to bring change about something important to them. In “The Lord of the Flies' ', Place communication seems to be the main source of communication because the boys didn't have a choice but to be on the Island and one thing that bonded them was finding a way to get back home.
In order to determine the relevant distinction between Role Functionalism and Realizer Functionalism, one needs to derive a concise description of what the functionalism theory entails. Functionalism is a theory about the nature of mental states. It became prominent during the 1960s and widely accepted in relation to its views which deemed plausible for many other sciences. In the philosophy of mind, it is the components of “a mental state of a particular type” which “does not depend on its internal constitution, but rather on the way it functions, or the role it plays, in the system of which it is a part” (Levin 2013). Functionalism is a theory seen rooted in Aristotle’s work in ‘Conception of the Soul’, and also a forbearer in that of Hobbes
First and foremost, they hold the role of reporting on the news accurately and fairly. This means that their information not only has to be accurate, but also be fair to what or whom they are discussing. They cannot defame an individual’s character in order to promote their story. Additionally, the media holds the responsibility of not being too biased in what they are reporting. They cannot strictly cover one aspect of the story without shedding light on another.
When only certain topics are addressed in the media, that is when Americans claim the news is bias. The news chooses to ignore certain issues, because they have to make the decision on what should be exposed to the public. Media coverage may benefit one party in an election by choosing which issues they cover (Baum, 2004). By choosing what to address on media, may help or hurt candidates, depending on the topic chosen. Media chooses what topics are addressed based on what that news company thinks is the most important, or interesting and will help their news get the most
The role of media is to inform or alert the public. The role of media is important in a democratic society because the democratic society inform the watchdog and for us to vote laws. It’s important for the media to fulfilled its role so that the public is informed, which allows them to make the best decisions. The role of media did not fulfilled its role as a watchdog.
The mass media is the means by which the majority of the public gets its daily national and global news updates. It is supposed to keep us informed and be a solid foundation from which we can form our own opinions. Because of this, it is unfortunate that the media in the United States is has an extreme bias on political topics. Being able to gather political information and facts about the government’s actions is critical in a democracy, however our market based media system makes it difficult to find neutral sources which don’t attempt to alter our perceptions. The political bias portrayed in our media system is represented by its use of agenda setting, one-sided dominance, and technology, resulting in a distrust of the media.
When thinking of the media you think they are reporting the appropriate and accurate information not based on any personal opinions and feelings. Also one would not think the media would be reporting based on one side of politics or the other. The media is extremely biased when it comes to politics and news. While some of the media is conservative-biased I believe the mass media is liberal-biased. Majority of media outlets are liberal companies, media personnel and journalists will identify themselves as democrats and liberals more so than republicans or conservatives and lastly the left side (liberals) of the mass media is persuasive on what information to report.
Media bias is a real problem. When people are not aware of the facts alone, rather interpretation of facts, they are being manipulated. Media should report facts concisely and promptly with as much accurate information as possible. When networks allow to dictate how they report news, there is a much greater chance to be biased. When networks accept monetary incentives to report in a specific manner, there is a much greater chance to be biased.
The most apparent model of communications that could be used to describe what happened when the message becomes problematic, in the film ‘Wag the Dog’, is the Interactional Model, even though it is not very clear until comprehensively analysed. There is a stage in the film, where there are two parties who are trying to send opposing messages; the White House trying to send a message of war to the general public of America, and then the CIA, who sends a message of peace, both to the White House and to the general public. The interactional model of communications is the most useful when looking to illustrate how the parties respond and how they give feedback to the message received. The best way to begin explanations is to summarise briefly what is going on in the film.
It also served as a means of communication through the mailing function and news forum function to make class announcements. Students can also use the news forum function to discuss with their classmates about their project
Journalism is a pivotal part of the public being exposed to information about the happenings of the world (Wilke 2013). Journalists are required to provide an honest depiction of events that would be otherwise hidden in plain sight. With the increase of platforms to receive information, such as online reporting, the public is exposed to a wide variety of inaccurate facts that negatively skews the levels of trust that exists for the press (Richardson 2017 pp. 1-3). It has become harder for journalism to remain as influential as it once was due to the growing distrust from the public (Keane 2013, n.p.).
