1. Introduction
Course Overview
The Common Core Curriculum is a mandatory requirement for all undergraduate students in the University of Hong Kong as a part of the higher education reform upon the transition to the 4-year university system. The Common Core Curriculum is aimed at boarding students’ horizon apart from their major in their undergraduate education. Through exposing into the 4 different areas of inquiry (AOI), namely Science and Technology Literacy, Humanities, Global Issues and China: State, culture and society; students will build a more holistic and comprehensive view towards the society through these cross-disciplinary learning. As demonstrate by Eric Mazur (1997) and MacArthur (2008) in their introductory level physics and chemistry courses, the personal response system is able to create an active learning atmosphere by asking students to submit their answer to multiple choice questions. The polling functions of the clicker system allow the teachers to assess the performance of the entire class instantly. The statistic of students’ response also shows whether there is any misconceptions existed among the students. In my lesson, instead of checking misconceptions of the students, I have used iclass (a personal response system developed by HKU) to initiate the in class discussion. In one of the lesson, we discussed how our sight would alter the perception of taste. In my previous experience, students are usually shy to give their answers in lecture. Therefore, this year, I use iclass to ask students to post up the type of flavor that they associate with a red jelly. Most of the students answered strawberry or watermelon, which belongs to sweet taste. And I then I select some students to briefly explain their answer. The result of this quick polling is in line with research studies which are subsequently discussed in lecture.
