Food is needed to sustain life. Artists are known to use food in their art. Some artists, most noted for their creative interpretations of themes including the presence of food are Kara Walker, Rirkrit Tiravanja, Janine Antoni, Robin Antar, and Patty Chang. Walker created a sugar sphinx. Tiravanja produces art out of a kitchen. Guests get to eat a meal made by him. His art is “part performance, part installation” . Antoni created seven chocolate busts and seven soap busts. Antoni gnawed chocolate and lard. Antar made food out of stone. Antar paid attention to detail making the food look like a real object. She filled an abandoned Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn with sugar . This “11- acre refinery” is going to be demolished . Condos, commercial spaces, affordable housing and a boardwalk are set to replace this abandoned refinery . This refinery is a symbol of New York City’s industrial past and leading employment. This factory produced half of the United States sugar making it the world’s largest sugar factory. This building is a fixture in the community and was a part of the labor struggles in this country. Creative Time is a public art patron who commissioned “Subtley” on the Williamsburg waterfront. Many people rushed to the show because this was only installed here for just over two months from May 10th- July 6th in 2014 leading this show to be the most talked about show in New York. The show saw 130,000 visitors most of which showed in the first two days. Viewers have said it was captivating. This show draws you in before you realize the disturbing fact that it is about slave trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. This was a major problem in history, slaves lost their limbs every time they used the mills creating blood sugar. This art is a tribute to the slave sugar industry.
