1. The 1920s was a decade of prosperity, fun and wild living, it was known also as "The Jazz Age". boasting new music, shocking fashions and improvement of life. The innovations behind many inventions that would attract attention in the 1920s, this included many things; radios, motorvehicles, entertainment, and much more. Peripherals such as radio and entertainment were rapid changes in technological advance, people sought out new forms of entertainment such as art, sports, and moving pictures.
America moved towards a more modern America by introducing progressivism into the politics of the 1920’s for the first time in history. A dichotomy of the 1920’s was the labor versus capital movement. Laborists, usually people who were a part of the working class, advocated for higher wages, less hours, and overall better working conditions. Capitalists, usually people who were employers and big business owners, wanted to keep their old business practices in place, such as cheap working conditions, low wages, and as many hours as needed. The Labor movement would be considered a progressive ideology while the capital movement the traditional ideology.
Two events in US History between 1920 and 1940 that inform the other are the Great Depression and The Prohibition. The Great Depression was the greatest economic slump in the history of the industrialized world, lasting from 1929 to 1939. It was considered one of the most significant economic crises in history. The Great Depression was caused by decreasing consumer demand, rising consumer debt, minimized industrial productivity, and the rapid uncontrolled development of the United States stock market. During the 1920s, company owners failed to give significant pay increases for employees, resulting in overproduction of many products by the end of the decade.
Throughout all of my years in history class the 1920’s have always been one of the most fascinating decades to learn about. The decade did not gain its nickname “The Roaring Twenties” by being drab and lifeless the whole time. Its stereotypical vibrant culture and exuberant parties can identify the period, however, the end of it marked one of the most devastating times America has ever known: the crashing of the stock market. Introduction: Thesis: The Roaring Twenties directly caused the collapse of the stock market for the following reasons: a false sense of prosperity, deficiency of available credit, and the over farming of the midwest. Although the twenties seemed fairly stable, a time with much wealth, they directly caused the collapse of the stock market, which led to the Great Depression.
The 1920’s in America is often considered as “The Roaring Twenties. World War I was over, women got suffrage, fashion changed immensely, prohibition was put into place, and jazz filled the air. The Roaring ‘20s was a decade of play and prosperity. Unemployment was low and Americans were better off financially. After World War I, America wanted to return to normal.
People are partying. The word of money fills in the air. People being miserable everywhere. These events were the daily lifestyle of people living in the 1920’s. The 1920’s was a prosperous time for America after World War I because after the war, the economy raised people’s hopes of being in the upper class.
Throughout the history of America, we as a nation have gone through many unique time periods. Whether it was during the colonial times where we fought for revolution or during the age of Manifest Destiny where we migrated West to fulfill our destiny or when we were battling through the Great Depression to fix and stabilize our economy all of these different times we have been through still bears an impact on our society as a whole today. A time period in specific I will be talking about is the Roaring 20s. The 1920s was an era of social and political change which sent America into the modern age, where for the first time Americans actually lived more in cities than farms. Along with that America itself doubled their total wealth in the span
America experienced a sudden disregard of Victorian values following World War I, causing the generation of the 1920s to dramatically contrast the previous. This severe degree of change produced three major manifestations of the contradictions in the twenties. There were massive conflicts to the Jazz Age, technological advancements, and Black Migration. The contradictions of the 1920s reflect America’s conflicted state between advancement and convention, as the cultural and technological developments of the era coincide with the inability of individuals to stray from traditional norms and racist attitudes.
The 1920’s was among the era that was known for prohibition, which was a nationwide constitutional ban on the production, importation, transportation and sale of alcoholic beverages that remained in place from 1920 to 1933. The 1920’s could easily related to current social conflicts that we have in the United States today. Bootlegging was a common occurrence in the Prohibition days, which was the manufacturing, distribution, and/or selling of alcohol, which was illegal during Prohibition. Today we have the same problem with marijuana. Marijuana is illegal in most states, but is still smuggled through the border of the US which is sold and used, just like alcohol was during Prohibition.
As the 1920s in America passed, many important and life-changing events occurred throughout the brief ten years. The first major event was on August 18, 1920, when Amendment XIX was added to the United States Constitution. This Amendment permits any U.S. citizen to vote, and forbids the denial of the right to vote on the basis of sex. The nineteenth amendment, overruling the fourteenth amendment, gave women the right to vote. Having passed this amendment, women now had more political freedom and power in the US.
When I was child I was very injury prone. One time when I was 8 years old I was trying to climb a playground wall but I fell off of it and sprained my ankle. Eventually the pain of the sprained ankle wore off and the ankle healed and I learned from the experience to stay safer. These experiences are somewhat like the great depression in the fact that a learning experience was made out of a bad situation.
America in the 1920-’s was an age of change. Some may have called this age “The Roaring Twenties”. It was a time of transformation when prohibition, jazz, and migration shaped the American landscape. One issue in particular, however, shook America: racism. A majority of the racial tensions were between the African Americans and the whites.
In the number 5 spot for the most important events in U.S. history in my opinion is The Civil War. I think that because it was an important for america war it took place from 1861 to 1865. It was the war for the survival of the union or the independence for confederacy. It was between the north and the south about slavery and all the other problems that were happening at the time. For the fourth spot on the list I would have to say 9/11.
