Gazella Gazella, more commonly known as the mountain gazelle, is a slenderly built animal with long legs and can range from light to dark brown with a white stripe on their face, white underparts, and horns used for protection. They fall under the kingdom Animalia, the phylum Chordata, the class Mammalia, the order Artiodactyla, the family bovidae; which would include cows, antelopes, goats, and sheep; and the genus Gazella. Mountain gazelles live in low altitude mountains and places that have desert conditions, such as sandy plains. They tend to avoid rocky areas with their slender legs and will stick to flatter surfaces like plateaus, valleys between mountains, and open areas but can be seen in real desert areas. It’s common for a mountain gazelle to spend their days resting in hills but will then leave that hill to graze during the night. These kinds of habitats can be found in places like the Arabian Peninsula, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Red Sea coast, and the Farasan Islands that are off the coast of Saudi Arabia and are in the Red Sea. Horns can be determined as short which would be about 220-294 centimeters long, but the female gazelle’s horns are 70% shorter than the males. (Lee) Fights mainly occur for territory between males. Mostly, these fights are just for intimidation and show with the gazelles stopping just centimeters before hitting each other; this is called an “air-cushion” fight.
