Although two proposal scenes in Pride and Prejudice are seems to be different in length, they have many similarities. Such as Darcy’s and Mr. Collin’s intentions are both centered on materialistic benefits which became such a stereotype in England that it becomes first thing to consider for them before marrying. Mr. Collins mentions his heritage regarding Elizabeth’s family. Similarly, Darcy also states that his proposal will benefit Elizabeth’s family. They both assume that Elizabeth will accept their proposal. After being denied, Darcy asks her reasoning and Mr. Collins doesn’t really believe in her refusal. What makes Darcy different is that his affection for Elizabeth. He begins his proposal with a genuine confession of his love. Only then he states his reasons. However, both Mr. Collins and Darcy are similarly prideful and arrogant in their attitude. Elizabeth’s reaction for Mr. Collins is straightforward. While refusing him politely she looks annoyed by being proposed by such a ridiculous man. She refuses Mr. Collins even though it could have been a beneficial marriage for both of them. In the first chapters, Elizabeth stated her expectance of love in a marriage. This refusal is the sign of her fine balance between her emotions and sensibility. Darcy’s confession, on the other hand, is quite shocking for her. Unlike Collin’s proposal which she had a clear idea about what is going on, Darcy’s sudden confession leaves Elizabeth confused. Darcy loves Elizabeth for sure.
