These efforts resulted in a steady improvement in his ability to follow and to use English in a business context. His listening skills seemed quite good. He was able to understand much more than the general theme and details of familiar and limited new material. Idiomatic and blended spoken English on new material and topics outside his field of work rarely caused any confusion. He was able to use communication skills to clarify the meaning. His pronunciation and intonation was generally good. His vocabulary range improved during this course and covered common terms in his business field well. Akemura made considerable effort to develop her overall communication skills through regular attendance and self-study. She was conscientious in completing homework assignments as well as previewing and reviewing each lesson's content. However, she was careful to venture into new areas of communication, depending mainly on communication skills that she was confident in. This means it was difficult to judge her improvement during this course. Ms. Akemura seemed to understand the general theme and flow of the conversation but did not show sufficient communication skills to use clarification. However, there were signs during extended telephone conversation practice, where clarification is required, she showed confidence to question and seek meaning and mediation in conversations. The speed of spoken English did not seem to be a problem, however, changing themes or context of the conversation usually caused some confusion. Her pronunciation was mostly clear and she used limited intonation. Grammar use was accurate, albeit rudimentary, and she sometimes did not use correct articles ‘a’ and ‘the’.
