Mr. Wuffles. Author: David Wiesner Illustrator: David Wiesner Copyright date: 2013 Mr. Wuffles!, by David Wiesner, is a story about a cat who is bored with his current selection of toys. His owner cannot find anything that will entertain him, despite his vast efforts. Throughout the book, the kitten continues to try to reach what it thinks is a bowl of milk. The story relies on a black and white color scheme. The lack of color allows the reader to focus on the illustrations and have a better understanding of how the kitten feels throughout each page. The minimal color also adds to the feeling of how naive and young the cat is. Without color, it gives the impression of the lack of experience and knowledge the baby kitten has. Henkes also uses texture throughout his story. Using different shades of black and white, Henkes is able to add texture to his story. For example, the use of darker gray is used to create a sense of fur on the kitten. This makes the scene easier to understand as the kitten climbs up to the top of the tree to try to get to the moon. The wood pattern also adds a realistic element to the book and makes it easier for children to identify the setting. Another use of texture is in the water. The water is shown to have a ripple effect with dark and light shades of gray. This is helpful as it shows the contrast between the bright reflection of the moon in the water that the kitten perceives as another bowl of milk. Henkes’ use of space in this book is another interesting element incorporated. Despite how far away the moon truly is, the moon appears to be just inches away from the kitten in a lot of the illustrations. This can account for how the
