Mrs Mallard’s Development In this story, “The Story of the Hour” by Kate Chopin, Mrs. Mallard who is the main character experiences the acceptance of freedom and her desires. After hearing the death of her husband, she was clueless about doing anything but look out of a window. This story shows that the author Kate Chopin was trying to deliver the stages of self awareness. Self awareness is shown in the story when Mrs. Mallard is crying, locked in a room, realized that something was approaching her, and foreseeing her own future. Mrs. Mallard’s sister “Josephine” and her husband’s friend “Richards” knew she had heart issues so they took care of her. Even though they assumed her husband was “killed” by in an accident, they slowly and calmly wanted Mrs. Mallard to know about it. After she was told “She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister’s arms”, (Chopin, 3). For that reason she was able to think of what had happened within the few minutes of her past life. Sitting in a armchair Mrs. Mallard glazes out at the blue skies through the window. Seeing the environmental existence beyond the building gave her the chance to relax and be able to breathe again.
