Officially, she is the second woman to hold the title of governor in the state of Texas. However, Dorothy Ann Willis Richards is regarded by many as the first woman who earn the election for Texas's top office of governor. Thanks to many years of volunteering in numerous gubernatorial campaigns, because she was the first woman to become Travis County commissioner twice, and since she was also the first woman to serve as state treasurer, the 45th Governor of Texas earned her title. For these reasons and many more, Ann Richardson, as she was better known, won the race 1990 gubernatorial race against Clayton Williams, fair and square. Unlike former governor Miriam "Ma" Ferguson, who is often disregarded as the stand in for impeached governor James "Pa" Ferguson, Mrs. Richardson dedicated many years of her life to the local and state government, prior to her race for governor (Brandeis University).

At about 12:45pm, I observed Tina was screaming at Alyssa Wolfe and two other service crew workers “cherry-picking” on the R17. After my one-on-one discussions with all the service crew workers, it became apparent that Tina Williams was dissatisfied with the way the service crew workers were working as well as the fact that Christian Segers and Alyssa Wolfe switched alleys mid-shift (a switch that they claimed was approved by Ana Velez). They also said that Tina Williams was cursing at them while complaining about the way they were working. Tina Williams denies swearing at anyone and says she was just concerned about the alley. In order to avoid a prolonged disruption to production for the rest of the shift, it was agreed that Alyssa Wolfe
She entrusts her son with sixty five hundred dollars (about $61,000 today) because she trusts her son will use the money well. ”that leaves sixty-five hundred dollars... it ain’t much, but it’s all I got in this world and I'm putting it in your hands”(107). This
Sharon Draper’s Copper Sun contains several complex characters: Amari, Teenie and Afi - but possibly the one with the most essential change is Polly. Polly begins as a snobby but poor indentured servant, she has the same jobs as slave but feels superior to them. As the plot progresses, Polly begins to learn that the slaves are just ordinary people and whites aren’t superior, but the same. Polly being white helps convey how learning more about a different kind of person or about a new thing can help remove the set stereotype someone may feel. Draper’s creation of Polly has many functions, and one of the these many instances of character design is how she plays into one of many overarching themes.

Marian Anderson was a driven African American singer. "We don't take colored" (Collins 106). Marian was deprived of singing in many places because of the color of her skin. She was always well behaved and never wanted conflict so she never would argue.
Victoria C. Plaut, a social and cultural psychologist, discusses in her article why it is necessary to use diversity science in order to properly address the ethnic and racial issues of our time. She also explains why color-blindness and multiculturalism are two ways to think about difference. Before reading this article, I defined color-blindness as a concept or word that we use as a deflection mechanism to avoid dealing with the problem. When it comes to race, I feel that society has decided that it is better if we do not notice if they are people of color or white, or if we do notice, that we do not talk about it.
In Susan Griffin’s “Our Secret,” Griffin seems to be trying to give answer to the reasons as to why people, such as herself, grow up into their characters and what past experiences influence the behaviors they exhibit. Her focus seem to be towards the reasons for why people do the negative things. She also continues to explain how everyone contains a secret of their own and that these secrets are commonly masked by a facade and that the way these secrets may be expressed differ from person to person. In attempt to help the readers understand how our past has a huge impact on our future Himmler’s childhood is used as an example. She claims that the current state of everything in existence may have been influence or predestined by the occurrence
In Nancy Turner’s article, “Wealth and Value in a Changing World”, published in 2005, from Earth’s Blanket: Traditional Teachings for Sustainable Living, she addresses how the massive reshaping in the way wealth is perceived has affected indigenous ways of living and eating on Vancouver island. Turner argues that the shift in the priority of ecological wealth to financial wealth has induced the growth in power of western ideals and systems. As well, the decrease in the value of traditional wealth leads to the disregard towards environmental, economic, and social repercussions of the actions of these introduced systems, such as the loss of indigenous culture and knowledge. I believe that Turner’s reasoning is significant, because, while sustainability
Shirley Garrett was a student in my Honors English I class and is a four year member and current officer of the Octagon Community Service Club, for which I am the faculty sponsor. Based on my observations of Shirley both in and out of the classroom, I enthusiastically recommend her for admission to your university. Shirley possesses a lucid communication style, a clarity that comes through in written work and presentations and continues to develop as she takes on more of a leadership role in the community service club. While Shirley’s transcript speaks to her generally strong academic abilities, what always stood out to me about Shirley was her genuine enthusiasm for learning.

One great progress I made is how to write a sentence to present the topic of the paper and reflect my position on that topic. As the most important sentence in an essay, thesis statements express the purpose of this writing. Before taking ENGL3000, I was confused about how to focus my ideas into one sentence; my thesis statements were too general, sprawling, and superficial to make my audiences clearly understand what these papers were about. However, after finishing many readings and writings in this class, I have grasped the key strategies to phrase a specific, arguable, and supportive thesis statement. More specifically, an effective thesis statement should have a specific topic to keep readers focus on the argument, reflect my position
