Betrayal is a main theme portrayed in the play Much Ado about Nothing. Betrayal can be defined as the breaking or violation of trust. It is on this foundation that this continuing theme carries out the focal plot of the play.
The play starts off with betrayal in Act 1 when Don John showed his defiance towards his brother Don Pedro. The first example of this theme happening is when Don Pedro and his friend Claudio agrees to make Don Pedro woo Hero in his name. The talk is then heard and the betrayal begins. Don John generates an idea to deceive Claudio by telling him that Don Pedro will woo Hero for himself. At the masked ball, is where the offer will take place and Don John accomplishes his plan. This betrayal between Don John and Don Pedro but did not have too much harm for Claudio and Hero because they were soon engaged. Another example of betrayal that took place before the masked ball was between Claudio and Benedick. Benedick felt betrayed by Claudio when he stated that he was in love with Hero. Benedick felt like Claudio was breaking his promise to him, to stay single and to be a bachelor with him. Don Pedro, Claudio, Leonato and Antonio were the men and Hero, Margaret and Ursula were the women who got together to play cupid for Benedick and Beatrice. They got together and lied to make Beatrice and Benedick fall in love with each other. In the beginning, they both hated each other and they both wanted nothing to do with love or marriage, but with a little lie that was told between the men and women, they finally realized that they needed to be together.
