Love, Deception, and Honor Today, roughly 90% of all American schools teach the arts and plays of William Shakespeare. In fact, Shakespeare is the only author who is specifically required by Common Core English Language Arts Standards for students in 9th grade to students in 12th grade. The lovely works of Shakespeare are taught in order to build a bridge and determine similarities between our modern time, and times far past. In his novel Much Ado About Nothing, there are many instances where plots and actions of such characters can be seen in modern society today. In act 4, Don Pedro states “If we can do this, Cupid is no longer an archer; his glory shall be ours” (2.1 323-325). This quote demonstrates Don Pedro insisting on turning hatred into love by committing his efforts into making Beatrice fall in love with Benedick. He is deceiving Benedick and Beatrice to eventually fall for eachother. Another act of deception appears in act 2 when Don John schemes up a plan to trick Claudio that his soon to be wife Hero, lost her chastity to another man. “I am sick in displeasure to him and whatsoever comes athwart his affection ranges evenly with mine” (2.2 5-6). This quote explains how Don John uses deception in order to rid Claudio of his hopeful future with Hero, and to leave him in sorrow and disgust instead. In modern society, trickery and the ruining of relationships are a very common occurrence. In terms of setting up relationships, online dating is the practice of finding a romantic partner on the internet via various apps such as tinder. Many individuals lie and deceive themselves to be more attractive in the dating pool, and to catch others' intentions. Deception is also evident from the fact that about 50% of marriages in the United States end in a divorce. The third leading cause to a divorce is the lack of honesty. This is seen in Shakespeare’s play when Benedick quickly changes his perspective on love after hearing that Beatrice has developed feelings for him. “When I said I would die a bachelor, I did not think I should live till I was married (2.3 214-215). This quote further explains how Benedick would always denounce love, and hate the idea of being with a woman because they were a waste of time. Suddenly, after hearing this exciting news about being loved by Beatrice, he wants to get married to her immediately. Another instance where we see the desire for marriage is when Margaret praises the fact of how honorable marriage is. “Is not marriage honorable in a beggar? Is not your lord honorable without marriage? (3.4 24-26) Here, Margaret claims you’re supposed to be open to discussing marriage as it is a positive action to get married. All individuals who find their significant other, deserve happiness and pride for their entire lives. Today in society, all men and women are expected to desire marriage and to find love.
