Shakespearean comedy is by definition quite a bit different than modern comedic works. A Shakespearean comedy is not defined as being lighthearted and carefree, full of humor, with petty humorous problems as in today’s comedic works. Shakespearean comedies, while they do contain bits of humor, are defined as a play were the troubles culminate in a “happy” ending versus a tragic one. This being said, comedy does not necessarily mean humor. In the 1993 film version of Much Ado about Nothing, Kenneth Branagh turns a Shakespearean comic play to more of a modern, light hearted comedy.
