Much Ado About Nothing

The play written by William Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing, is a romantic story about soldiers looking for love. This play is structured as a dramatic comedy using dialogues, such as verse, prose, and soliloquy. Looking deeper into the play, Much Ado About Nothing Has a main theme that is constantly brought up throughout the play; Deception. Deception shows up all around the play in many forms, through themes such as love, envy, and even stupidity. With all of these themes surrounding deception, I believe that the purpose that Shakespeare had behind writing this play was to show how Deception is not necessarily good or bad, but that it can be used in both ways.

My daughter tells us all (II.III 138-141).” While Benedick is hesitant to believe that Beatrice is madly in love with him, The fact that Leonato, the uncle of Beatrice, is the one saying this about Beatrice gives Benedick a false hope that this is true due to the fact that “Knavery cannot, sure, hide himself in such reverence” (II.III 126-128), which is referring to Leonato. The Prince, Leonato, and Claudio are trying to deceive Benedick that Beatrice loves him, but in reality she doesn’t, And they are just toying with his feelings. The same can be said vice versa, as in Act III Scene I, lines 38-122, Hero and Ursula are also trying to trick Beatrice that Benedick loves her. “But are you sure That Benedick loves Beatrice so entirely? So says the Prince and my new-trothed lord...”But Nature never framed a woman’s heart of prouder stuff than that of Beatrice” (III.I 38-122). Beatrice is also reluctant to believe that Benedick is in love with her, but hearing from Ursula and Hero that he is in love
