If one were to read the play alone without watching a modern interpretation of the play or the filmed versions by Branagh or Whedon, it would leave a great deal of room for interpretation. This means, the reader is responsible for reading between the lines to comprehend the mood and setting of each individual character’s feelings and emotions in each scene. Examining the title, it foreshadows exactly what this play is about. Spying, lying and misunderstandings are the main themes carried out from beginning to the end. The next scene I would like to discuss is where Claudio still has no clue that Don Jon and Borachio have been plotting lies, since the masked ball, as it was portrayed in the film (2.2.33-55). For a brief moment he wanted to yell up at the balcony and Don John holds him back to encourage him to have this conversation at the church. This scene becomes the basis for Claudio to manifest into an angry, spiteful, hurtful and dishonored man. These emotions, his hurting masculinity and his need for revenge becomes clear. Since the beginning of the play all male characters either display or communicate what they think of women and marriage. Their acceptance of sleeping around or with multiple women as a man, demonstrates masculinity and charm. Set up or decorated as part of the growth from a boy to a man is where their vindication for this kind of behavior lies. Therefore, women in this era become sexualized prey for men, but after capturing them in terms of using them for their entertainment they were no longer necessary.
