“Love is when one’s happiness is more important than your own.” H. Jackson Brown Jr. In the book, Much Ado about Nothing by William Shakespeare, there are two couples, Claudio and Hero, and Benedick and Beatrice. Both declared their love for each other, but that could’ve been a lie when they thought it was the truth. According to personal beliefs, Beatrice and Benedick are not in love. Benedick loves Beatrice, but Beatrice doesn’t love Benedick. The quote above says it perfectly. “Love is when one’s happiness is more important than your own.” This is clearly not expressed in the book. They insult each other and feel sickened by the thought of the other. And then, they miraculously fall in love because the other sent them a false love poem. They went from 0-100 real quick. “‘And Benedick, love on. I will requite thee, taming my wild heart to thy loving hand.’” (Shakespeare, pg. 45). All of a sudden, after hearing that she is too prideful to realize Benedick loves her, she becomes determined to fall in love with him. He hasn’t proved to her that he is in love, he insults her continuously every time they see each other. Yet, she is drawn to him after being called prideful and biased. As if to prove them wrong. Perhaps she falls in love with him later, but the relationship was only formed because they were misinformed. In this scene Benedick says, “Love me? Why, then it must be requited.” (Shakespeare, pg. 39). It is agreeable that they were able to form the relationship after that push to do so, but that is not justifiable by their once true intentions to hate each other until death do they mercifully part. However, after they do find love for each other, Benedick truly wants her to be happy, but, while Beatrice may like Benedick, she doesn’t feel the love the same way he does towards her.
