When looking at historical figures, people constantly raise questions like, “How did they get to that level of importance in the world? It’s an ever longing topic of discussion with leaders. Are leaders born or made? In this discussion, I will explain how leaders are made using the example of Muhammad Ali. Muhammad Ali wouldn’t have become the advocate of political change and peace hadn’t certain life events during his childhood sparked his desire. Growing up in the west side of Louisville, Kentucky, a young Cassius Clay had his bike stolen from him at an early age. This allowed him to be an advocate for change. He dodged the military draft during the Vietnam War, protesting that he wasn’t supporting the U.S. government’s involvement there. As a result, he lost his titles and wouldn’t fight for four years. He sacrificed his career to make his cause of being the voice of a counterculture during the 60s and 70s. He also was an example of the racial pride of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movements of the 1960s. He was the voice of those who couldn’t voice their cause. Muhammad Ali had the world prominence and recognition being a world class boxer. He used that as a leverage to express the causes of those individuals who wouldn’t have a chance to voice their opinions. He became a pivotal figure in movements during his life. I do not believe Muhammad Ali would have been the man that he was as a leader had not those kids stole his bike as a child. That event sparked the fire within Muhammad to defend himself. As his boxing career began to flourish and he became a world figure, Muhammad used that as a tool to voice the cause of those people who couldn’t voice their causes to mass media. Muhammad Ali found an event in his life to make sure others wouldn’t have to deal with oppression anymore.
