Issues Related to Multiculturalism and Diversity in CNUSD
The Corona Norco Unified School District serves over 53,000 students, and is the largest school district in Riverside County, which is in Southern California. The district is diverse in its population. CNUSD serves 8,000 English Learners representing over 45 languages. There are many issues related to multiculturalism and diversity in the district. The areas that are currently being studied by the district include: equity versus equality, closing the achievement gap, meeting the needs of English learners and understanding and embedding cultural differences in our lessons in classrooms.

Some of these inequities are related to socioeconomic status, societal inequity, familial inequity, and cultural inequity. Keys to successful states and districts have been the creation of a teaching and learning systems that provide excellent education to all students (Hammond-Darling, L. (2010). To work toward equity, educators need professional development, resources and interventions so that each child has access to the individualized support they need to achieve to their greatest potential (Scholastic, 2016). CNUSD is working to improve educational equity by seeking to identify any disparities in educational performance in its student population. The district is working to collect and analyze data from a variety of sources including math and English language arts. This data is included in the Local Control and Accountability Plan report issued by the California Department of Education. This data includes information about a school’s suspension rates, absenteeism, graduation rates and how English language learners are making progress towards proficiency, just to name a few of the …show more content…

These talks are called, “Data Talks.” Once that each team is aware of the status of the school, each team has set goals for itself connected to areas of needed improvement. Currently teachers are planning and implementing specific, targeted interventions to improve student learning.
Additionally, as educators, the district provides excellent professional development opportunities to support teachers in their ability to learn intervention strategies that are targeted to the needs of our student population. These trainings are offered throughout the school year, and in the summer. Planning days are also provided to grade level teams to develop plans for interventions. Finally, at Todd academy there is a bilingual aide that pushes into each classroom three times a week for intervention with language learners.
