Many of the biggest events, traditions and activities that are shared by people across the UK help to define and contribute to the overall British identity. Many events and traditions have strong connections to different ethnic backgrounds. On July 6th 2005 London conducted mass celebrations as it was announced the winner of the 2012 Olympics bid. The bidding process for the Olympics demonstrated a great sense of harmony between cultures across the UK and created a unity between different ethnic origins within London and Britain (Falcous and Silk, 2010).
Over the course of the past few years there has been a number of significant events which have contested multiculturalism within the UK. Less than 24 hours after the national celebrations of winning the Olympics bid, the nation was thrown into national mourning. The British national party (BNP) have produced a number of articles regarding multiculturalism, in which they show there viewpoint on increased multiculturalism within the British society. They suggest that Immigration goes against patriotism, due to are liberal national values which make up our indentity it allows for immigrants values to be maintained which leads to destruction of British indentity and values (British National Party, 2015). Furthermore BNP argue that multiculturalism is leading to the creation of a new United Kingdom, where the nations defining qualities become extinct (British National Party, 2015).
