A Night Divided took place in Berlin, Germany, a little bit after the World War II time. Greta’s (the main character) dad escapes the brick Berlin Wall, which was used to divide West Germany and East Germany. Now Greta is destined to find a way with her family to escape the extremely difficult route to freedom. The main reason on why the Berlin Wall was put up was because, Germany was not happy with the amount of people leaving East Germany to West Germany.
One of the two books being compared in this essay is titled “Defiance” by Alvin Townley and was written in 2014. The other novel that was chosen for this essay was written in 1971 and is titled “Five Years to Freedom” it was written by James N. Rowe. These two books were focused on the capture and the treatment of American Prisoners of War during the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War started in 1954 and ended on April 30, 1975 totaling over twenty years. Each book has its idea of the incidents that happened and in “Defiance” there are several stories of a gang eleven American soldiers that was known famously as the Alcatraz Eleven. The book is about a boy named Francisco and his family are immigrants from Mexico. The family comes to the United States to work to support the family. The family is poor so they have to send Francisco, his older brother Roberto, and Papa to work. While Francisco and Roberto have to go to school. One day the family gets sent back to Mexico but Francisco and Roberto stay for school.
In the book Outcasts United, the author, Warren St. John, tells a story about a young Jordanian woman, Luma Mufleh, who founded a youth soccer program that consisted of the majority of young refugee boys now living Clarkston, Georgia. The teams consisted of players from the ages of nine to seventeen that were forced to flee their war torn countries and have since been relocated in apartment complexes in the Clarkston area. Luma’s purpose for starting the “Fugees” was to help keep these boys off of the streets and she hoped to help them build a better life in the United States. None of them had names that they went by anymore they just went by being called stupid Jews by the people who ran the camps. The things that had happened to these people were so unbelieveable. Everyone is different. We all have our own personalities and we all take different directions in our lives. People often find themselves lost in this giant world and feel as if they can't share what they are truly thinking or feeling. They hide their personalities and shield themselves from the people of the world, and the quote "Character is what you in the dark." all the more true.
In “The Cellar” by Natasha Preston is about a 16 year old girl named Summer Robinson. She lives a fairly good life, and nothing extraordinary has ever happened. The setting takes place in present time in a small town called Long Thorpe but mostly in a cellar. A community where nothing bad really takes place, until young Summer is alone is taken. She is brought to a different aspect of a new yet drastic life of thriller.
In Anne Fadiman’s book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, two cultures clash with each other in the struggle to save Lia Lee, a Hmong child refugee with severe epilepsy. Although Lee and her family live in the United States, and thus receive medical care from Westerners, her family believes that Lee’s condition is sacred and special. The following miscommunications, both culturally and lingually, between the American doctors and the Lee family leave Lia Lee in comatose at the end of the book. However, Lia Lee could have been saved if the Lee’s had a better understanding of the American doctors’ intentions, and the American doctors understood the Hmong culture. Essentially, the tragedy of Lia Lee can be attributed to the clash of American and Hmong cultures at both the surface and sub-surface level.
The novel, Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix, is mainly about two boys, Jonah and Chip. The adolescent Jonah Skidmore, feels like an average kid, with an intelligent but slightly annoying younger sister named Katherine. The fact that Jonah is adopted has never been a big deal for him, maybe due to his parents always being very open and reassuring about it. To Jonah, life feels normal. That is, until the letter arrives.

A loving mother will feel guilty for anything that happens to her children, and even for that how they feel. Mothers is the person who cares the most about her child. The story “Teenage Wasteland” tells about a common situation many families experience: a misunderstood child creates problems to his parents, not by fault, but because he feels unwanted.
The novel uses many literary techniques such as foreshadowing and irony to build a strong connection between every scene and builds closer and closer to the development of the murder. There are many foreshadowing events which develop in the story before the death of Santiago. The murder is avoidable, but nobody stops it from happening. The dream, the weather, and nature all foreshadow Santiago 's death. The instance of foreshadowing at the beginning of the story is Santiago’s dream.
