Everywhere you look there is thrill and peril, every time you think you’re safe there is murder and treason in The Runaway King. The author of The Runaway King is Jennifer A. Nielsen. In the book The Runaway King, Jaron the King of Carthya evades assassination and sets off on a journey on to keep the Crown and stop the ever coming war. Treason, murder, thrills, and peril are all present in the plot, setting, and characters in The Runaway King. Murder and treason are evident in the setting, plot, and characters. One example of murder is when Roden kills Delvin. “Devlin raised his sword to attack, but in a single move, Roden deflected his thrust and stabbed Delvin just below the chest. Delvin was dead the instant he hit the ground.” When Ronden kills Devlin so easily it shows just how skilled Roden has gotten in the little time he has been away. It als makes him Pirate King, this is one of the most important murders in The Runaway King. An example of peril is when Devlin begged Jaron to spare his life. “Devlin bowed his head.’Sage, spare my life, I beg you!’ If you want to live, release Imogen.” This is an important example of peril because it shows how noble Jaron was to save Imogen over himself. It also shows how much of a coward devlin really was. One example of thrill was when Jaron figured out that Imogen had planted flowers with knifes under them to help Jaron. “No, Imogen planted them because of the danger. They were for me. I dug beneath the flowers with my fingers and very quickly felt something hard beneath them. After a little more digging I found a knife.” Jaron finding the knife shows how clever both Jaron and Imogen are, also with the pre planted knife it would have been a lot harder for Jaron to leave Tarblade Bay
