Abortion is one of the most controversial issues of modern times. Views on the practice of aborting unborn babies have destroyed families, friendships, reputations and businesses. In some parts of the country, if you don’t condemn the act as a sin of the greatest proportion you can be blacklisted by the entire town, and in other parts, even suggesting it could be wrong will do the same.
Murfreesboro, Tennessee, a town just south of Nashville, is ravaged by the debate over this issue. Murfreesboro is an odd city, having been in the top five of the United States fastest growing cities for the past 5 years, it has a very diverse population from all over the country. This being so, there are lots of conflicting views, specifically on abortion. Murfreesboro also happens to be popular place for people to come get an abortion, as it is right in the middle of the state, and has very lax abortion laws. When the state congress introduced a bill that would give themselves the ability to change abortion laws, the town descended into chaos. I couldn’t even go to a coffee shop without overhearing someone arguing whether abortion was right or wrong. Which infuriated me, because the bill actually had nothing to do with the morality of abortion, or if it was going to be legalized completely or not at all. All the bill would do, is give the state congress the power to change the established laws on abortion however they saw fit. Which is a problem, because Tennessee’s state congress has changed hands between the two parties so many times over the past few decades it’s almost comical. I could just imagine the insanity that would be brought up if the laws on abortion changed every time our congress
