One of the important things effects music can have is helping deliver a message to an audience. Music can tell us how people are feeling about events in their life, people in their life, or even what is happening in the world. Consequently, examining music in the 1970s can help people understand how ideas in the world were changing.
Plenty of music in the 1970s showed the changing values in society and depicts how the role of women in society was becoming important and respected. During this time society began to view women as equals to men thus music with messages of female empowerment and supporting the feminist movement was popular. Source 1, an album cover which shows a scuba diver saving a woman, still shows the previous views that society considered men to be the hero and considered women to be the helpless victims. Source 1 also shows how the media sexualised women and made them out to be only important due to their appearance. Nevertheless, a historian could consider this source limited in this argument, as it only shows the cover of the album, not the actual context of the songs, and the cover could be completely unrelated to the songs inside. Source 3 also shows the previous views where society considered women to be inferior to men through lyrics like “I played the tune, you dug the beat, now come on, girl - be nice to me” and “If you dance to the music, don’t you know, you’ve got to pay to the piper”. Conversely, these lyrics mention the expectations of women in relationships, and how men expected women to date with them for the reason that they were nice to the women. This sources limitation is that it was written by a male group, which means that the views of females at the time aren't included in this source as it is written completely from a male
