Music and poetry are normally not mentioned in the same sentence together. However, the similarities between music and poetry are far greater than observed by the general public and media. Both poetry and music are about flow, rhythm, meaning, and expression. If a song has beat and construction, it can be described as a work of poetry. Most songs that are written can be connected to poetry in some way. One could say that music is poetry, because the difference between the two is so small that all poetry needs is either a vocalist or instruments. She wrote the song, because she knew everyone goes through hard times even herself. She wanted a way to show people that they were not alone in this life. The song was written after Mandisa heard the story of a lady named Kisha. Kisha's cancer story started this past January. A week after finding out that she and her husband, Pastor Breonus Mitchell, were going to have a second child, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite knowing that their health insurance would only pay for a portion of her cancer treatments and that it wouldn't pay anything for her prenatal care, the young couple knew that Jesus would make a way. Through the misery of a double mastectomy and months of chemotherapy, they continued to hold onto their faith and on June 8, a perfect and healthy baby boy, Brennon Michael Mitchell, was born. But the story didn't stop on that happy note. Kisha is still battling for her life, taking both chemo and radiation treatments. The medical bills are piling up and she is unable to work, but the Mitchell family stands firmly on their faith, taking one day at a time. Although it would be hard to be an overcomer, it is not impossible and anyone can find a way to overcome. She wanted to write a song that would help anyone that heard the song. She never knew how much the song could really impact someone. The song means more to me than most would think. One day I was to my breaking point and could not think I could handle anything else. I knew I had to turn to God and let him help me. He told me to turn on Pandora and go to Mandia’s radio channel. When I turned on Pandora, the song “Overcomer” was playing. I stopped and just listened to the song all the way through and right then I knew I would be an overcomer over anxiety and depression. I listened to the song over and over for days until one day I woke up, and I realized God had helped me with the depression I was going through by one single song. After hearing the song that day, I have not been the same. My anxiety and depression is not completely gone, but I know that I can overcome anything that is thrown my way. If I had never heard the song that day, I am not sure where I would be today. The song taught me that anxiety and depression was not in control of my life. Instead, I learned that God was in control of my life, and I was going to overcome depression and
