Wow! I loved reading this play. After reading it initially, I was in awe due to how much I enjoyed it! It was even more interesting when I researched and found out Tennessee Williams wrote Vieux Carre based on similar interactions with the characters in this play. Yikes.

It is adapted from Shrek, a 2001 DreamWorks Animation movie, as well as a 1990 children’s literature Shrek! written by William Steig. The original musical is directed by Jason Moore with book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori. After watching the recording version of Shrek the Musical, I consider that it is a successful production if the purpose of this musical is to amuse audiences and bring them an enduring audio-visual feast.

Irving Berlin’s White Christmas is a joyful, holiday, thrilling production created in order to help people not only get in the Christmas spirit, but to realize what makes Christmas special is who you spend it with. The musical opens up with an army scene on Christmas Eve. All of the soldiers are attempting to get in the holiday spirit, but especially Bob Wallace and Phil Davis. These guys are the life of the party. They performed for all of the other soldiers by singing different holiday songs as they wore their Santa hats, and bells around their neck.

The movie ties in more brutality and violence to appeal to a modern audience that demands intense appeal to the senses. The play uses the simplicity of setting elements such as the balcony and common acting techniques to communicate Shakespear’s original message. Given the time period of the text, Shakepear’s use of these strategies are as modern as those unique techniques used in the movie. On November 28th, 2015 I attended Ben Stevenson’s version of The Nutcracker which was being performed by the Houston Ballet at the Wortham Theater Center. The dance featured two separate acts and multitude of dances as well as a live orchestra. Baz Luhrmann is widely acknowledged for his Red Curtain Trilogy which are films aimed at heightening an artificial nature and for engaging the audience. Through an examination of the films Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby, the evolution and adaptation of his techniques become evident. Luhrmann’s belief in a ‘theatrical cinema’ can be observed to varying degrees through the three films and his choice to employ cinematic techniques such as self-reflexivity, pastiche and hyperbolic hyperbole. The cinematic technique of self-reflexivity allows a film to draw attention to itself as ‘not about naturalism’ and asks the audience to suspend their disbelief and believe in the fictional construct of the film.
