Description of the Music
One O’Clock Jump: The song begins with the piano player, drummer, and guitar playing a moderato tempo. It was immediately followed by the trumpets, trombones, and saxophones which immediately changed the tempo into allegro. The dynamics changed quite fast as it changed into mezzo forte when the other instruments began. However, it would go back and forth from moderato to allegro. Even the dynamics would get to forte and suddenly fall into mezzo piano. There was points during the song where one of the trumpet players would get a solo spot and play while only the piano played a lento tempo. It was a very lively piece with the up and down tempo really getting the crowd involved. The dynamics seemed like they were all over the place.
Night and Day: For this song, it started with the piano player playing a lento tempo with the dynamics of pianissimo. This followed with the drums and guitar keeping the same pace. Once the saxophones came in, the tempo became an adagio tempo with piano dynamics. It tied all together when the singer began to sign. It pretty much stayed consistently throughout her performance with the only time it changed was when it when to lento and pianissimo respectively. I felt the trumpet players were the ones who carried the song early one. It had a upbeat and cheerful mood, especially as it got louder and louder with the trumpet players. Then the saxophone players would come in and everything tied in together. I could feel that with the addition of the saxophone players, it felt like a true jazz song. My favorite part was when the jazz soloist played while the piano and drum players kept the tempo. It had an amazing sound that echoed with the crowd including myself. It was loud and moderate throughout the song and then the stopping at the end was on
