Although non-violence was unheard of in the Western World this belief in India attracted everyone regardless of sex or religion. At the center of this movement, Mohandas Gandhi, a British educated lawyer, campaigned for non-violence through passive resistance. Passive Resistance was a means of disobedience through non-violence.
When India was in depression, the British East India company heavily taxed salt. Many civilians were not able to afford a necessity in cooking. In order to stand up for these monopolies, Mohandas Gandhi started the salt march. According to “Gandhi and the Salt March”, “Gandhi began a march from his communal village in western India to the coast to gather salt for free.” This explains how Gandhi stood up against the monopolies with his followers by walking through these marshes and boiling the water gained in order to produce salt which was illegal at the time.
Gandhi convinced the Indians that he could get them their independence. They would get their independence long as they didn't cooperate. Gandhi used a couple of lines from the Declaration of Independence that in other words meant, “if a law is unjust, then it is not a law.” Gandhi also told his people that in order to pretext they had to be willing to get jail time. Gandhi's methods worked because both his people and him were uncooperative.

This method worked because it peacefully angered oppressors, allowed people of all races and ethnicities to participate, and involved leaders persuaded people to make sacrifices for the greater good. One of the reasons peaceful protesting worked so well was that it irritated enemies of the cause without the use of violence. Boycotts and sanctions were one effective method of angering the oppressive governments. Gandhi staged a hartel in India and Martin Luther King Jr. helped start the Montgomery Bus Boycott in America (Doc A and B).
Although, violently fighting the British may have eventually won India its independence, Gandhi choosing to be nonviolent caused India to learn how to do things on its own while still reaching its goal of actually being independent from the British significantly faster. Gandhi’s use of nonviolence was because he didn't want to hurt anyone, he just wanted India to be independent. Going to jail gained Gandhi attention, followers and respect, and lastly, Gandhi not seeing the British as his enemy contributed to a more peaceful way on how to gain India’s freedom. Both Civil Disobedience and the Gandhi article are alike based on the fact they both discuss civil disobedience, attending prison, and standing for one’s beliefs. Civil disobedience can be seen as a good thing and a bad thing depending on to what extent one is breaking the laws. Some people may break the law because they feel that it is unfair to them but others break the for the simple fact of doing what they want in order for it to benefit themselves. Laws are meant for the majority which means even if they are not pertaining to certain citizens. Thoreau targeted laws that pertained to him, Gandhi went on strike for the better of his country and people.
For many years India struggled greatly for their independence. The three major events in the Indian fight against British rule were: the Golden Temple Massacre, the Salt March, and the homespun movement. During the Temple Massacre British and Gurkha troops killed at least 379 unarmed Indians meeting at the Jallianwala Bagh, to discuss nonviolent resistance and protest. However, the British had passed a law that said they were forbidden from encouraging and having meetings about nonviolent protests. The Salt March, which took place in India, was an act of civil disobedience.
