The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a book written by Rebecca Skloot. Chapter 1 begins shortly after Henrietta’s daughter, Deborah, and her son, Joe, were born. After those two were born, she then began to experience vaginal bleeding at the wrong time of the month. Feeling like something was wrong, Henrietta rushed to the doctor. She only went to see the doctor “If she felt she had no other choice”.
Rebecca Skloot was first introduced to Henrietta’s cells and her story when her instructor in her Biology spoke of it. Sloot automatically became interested in the story and wanted to dedicate most of her work on Henrietta. Sloot created the interest of learning more of Henrietta’s story by introducing how her interest in the story began. Getting her point of view on the whole story made me interested as well. Reading about how passionate she is toward Henrietta made me excited to read the book.
Rebecca Skloot stands before the rickety old cabin, pressed against her parked car, fearfully hiding from the looming, antique cottage, afraid of what is to come. She lies in the middle of Turner Station, an ancient, eerie, ghost of a town where the Lacks family grew up on a bustling tobacco farm. The house was the childhood home of Henrietta Lacks, the late cervical cancer patient whose cells became the first ever to continue to reproduce and thrive outside of the body. When I first picked up this book, I knew nothing about the contents I was about to read. I had no idea that there could be such emotion, and anger, and tears, and hatred all towards science. I never knew people could be manipulated so much, and I never knew there could be such miracles, such as Henrietta Lacks herself. The quote above is what really captured my attention and what drew me into the book. I never knew I could learn so much and feel so much all while reading one short book.
In the book My Antonia, the characters developed a lot throughout the story, but one character development that stood out to me was Antonia Shimerda. Antonia's character developed so much in this novel, she becomes a more independent character, but that's only because of the challenges she faced when she moved from Bohemia, her dad committed suicide, she had to work as a servant girl and when her fiancé left her. In the beginning of the novel, Antonia and her family are welcomed into Nebraska. They stay next to Jim Burden and his grandparents, they are the ones who welcomed them.
It 's a jaw-dropping book that will leave you wanting more as the author Laurie writes in a crisp and clear way describing the young girl Melinda’s horrific story and how it unfolds. The author 's tone gives off the vibe of a young frighted girl which I find really enhances this sad, but exhilarating story. The time period within the novel is constantly changing from the past to present, which I did not like, because since read inconsistently, I had to go back into previous chapters to refresh my memory. This book was an enjoyable read. It was necessary to pay close attention in order to keep up with the plot and the changing time periods in every chapter. It is a perfect book for young adults and teens that enjoy books of fantasy and romance.
I like this book because it shows certain problematic topics in society that are still present. I will definitely recommend this book to other because I believe that there isn´t bad points on its structure, instead, the good points are that express or reflects the attitude and ideas of each of the characters and tells in detail the environment, along with the mood around the
