“I’m Not Okay” was a popular song amongst fans of the emo genre and people who were not necessarily fans of emo music. The song was popular because almost everyone can relate to its lyrics. For example, many people have said the words “I 'm not okay, you wear me out” (My Chemical Romance) at some point in their lives. Gerard Way’s rough and whiny vocals help emphasize the meaning of the lyrics. His whispering and building up to a scream during the bridge helps the song reach a climax of emotions, and that the singer accepts that he is not okay.
