Rhetorical analysis of Ed Sheerans “Be yourself embrace your quirks”

Ed sheeran gives the speech be yourself embrace your quirks at american institute for stuttering benefit gala- june 8,2015 in new york city, to inspire kids to be themselves through rhetorical choices like tone and diction, pathos, and encouragement to inspire his audience to be themselves. In order for Ed Sheeran to make his audience feel connected he used rhetorical devices using sentences like “I really don’t do a lot of speeches. I think the one thing I want to say is be yourself” shows personal involvement. Repeating the word “I” a lot to show the audience that he is one of them and can connect to how they are feeling. The last rhetorical device that Ed Sheeran uses is an overstatement example being “ I was a very very weird child,Very weird” Using an overstatement like that makes his audience laugh and feel even more connected to him in a way that they feel comfortable and almost like a friend. …show more content…

Ed Sheeran is a famous singer all over the world so it's not surprising that his audience takes interest in his life. Using the emotional appeal of his childhood and the difficulties that he faced growing up as a young child puts hope in his fans and audience. Examples he uses include “ ….I lacked an eardrum on one side of my face so stuttering was actually the least of my problems..” Including a sentence like that is vital to his speech because while trying to inspire kids to be themselves it is important to teach them how to overcome difficulties in life and how to be able to overlook that and not hold you back from being what you desire to be in
