Introduction (Dually Written): (H) A bead of sweat rolls down your forehead. Your brain’s neurons start firing, sending signals this way and that. In a fraction of a second, you must make a decision; run or fight? Live… or die? (B) In the, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, “My Escape From North Korea” by Hyeonseo Lee, and “Trapped” by Aron Ralston, each of these characters must make these decisions. In Hyeonseo Lee’s speech, “My Escape from North Korea”, she shows her own resilience during the aforementioned escape. (E1) At 4 minutes and 13 seconds into the speech Lee recounts her experience in China and being tested of her knowledge of Chinese, where despite being terrified she pulled through and passed the exam, allowing her to stay in the country (Lee). (A1) This shows her ability to face adversity because despite her nervousness she answered question after question correctly, in order to stay in the country. The trait is clearly shown here because Lee was able to face her fears even in her hectic environment. Being able to roll with the punches is important because otherwise you may be caught off guard and make a mistake. (E2) Another example of this is shown at the 7 minutes and 28 seconds mark (Lee). While Lee was guiding her family through China they were stopped by an officer and Lee lied to him, telling him that she was chaperoning a group of deaf people to explain their inability to talk. (A2) Lee adapted to the challenge and made sure her family was protected. Adaptation is a key part of survival because it allows you to read a situation and find the best outcome. If Lee had not possessed this characteristic, she likely would’ve been caught and sent back to North Korea several times
