Kathryn Stockett successfully uses rhetorical devices to get the reader to feel and understand the perspectives of the protagonists. Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence. We see Stockett use ethos and pathos in the very first chapters when we learn that Hilly doesn't like Minny and Minny doesn't want to say why at first, but the incident with Ms. Holbrook was affecting her chances of getting a job because of the influence Hilly has over this suburban society. I would define my theory of writing as being as authentic as possible in different kinds of projects. In this analysis, the rhetoric analysis focuses on two genres namely, a portrait of Leonardo DiCaprio holding his Oscar award alongside the image of a tiger mimicking a “high five” sign. There’s expressive writing, informative writing, and persuasive writing. Expressive writing is usually addressed when writing something personal and is when the writer uses personal feelings or experiences, an example is a personal journal. Informative writing addresses a person that the writer is trying to teach something to, an example of this is a teacher writing a paper for students to read and review. And finally there’s persuasive writing, persuasive writing is used to convince the reader to agree or disagree with the topic written, an example of this is a research paper.
Over the course of the semester, my main goal was to become a more precise writer and develop my identity as a writer. According too, the Portfolio Letter assignment sheet, becoming a better writer consists of precise planning, draft and revising. I am writing to share my reflections on the work I’ve done, the things I’ve learned, and the challenges I’ve overcome over the course of your Writing 121. I will also be sharing how I plan to use the tools that this class has provided me with in the future. Specifically, I will be writing about my struggles with writing analytical papers, some of the personal challenges that I faced while writing them, and the techniques that this class equipped me with that helped me to overcome them. Since analytical papers aren’t easy for me, my strongest essay this term was the Literacy Narrative essay at the very beginning of the term because it allowed me to combine my more creative writing techniques with the analytic paper style the class was designed for. I think that there were many reasons for this, but I think the biggest one is that I tend to be more of a creative writer and so an essay like that was perfectly up my alleyway.
