Did you know 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes? A father contributes a lot to a child and life lessons are learned from this parent. But what happens when they are absent from the life? My uncle Roosevelt Hubbard is my giant he is a local union 141 carpenter, he grew up on south shore without a father and went to private schools most of his life then he had an arm injury that changed his life. I met my uncle on my aunt’s block of 89th and stony at the time my uncle and my aunt were still friends and high school sweethearts but they eventually started dating and got married in 2006. It was hard going to school in a place like Oak Park, where people come from a two parent home or both of their parents are active in their life because those kids don’t understand what I went through and dreamed of doing with my father he could never toss a ball outside or just hang with me he would rather hang with friends or go drinking, sadly it’s still this way but I can always count on my uncle.Without my uncle, I don’t think I would have grown up respecting woman, elders, or my peers. I think that I have grown into a good person and I try to model myself after my uncle. My uncle comes from humble beginnings with a house full of roaches as soon as you got near the door, he understands the value of a person and property. My uncle is not shy to share his wealth or knowledge with the youth in the neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods.

He even cares about the appearance of our block and others too. I spend most of my Sundays walking around with a garbage can and a shovel and broom to sweep the blocks, clean the drains so the block won’t flood when it rains, and sweep the sidewalk. He often says “ appearance is everything, if we want to be looked at as someone important, we must care about what we have.” Also, since he is a contractor, he often works on various projects around the Chicagoland area helping building walmarts and dealing with the metra.
