“ My Grandfather cried, waving his ever-present pipe as we listened, They’re going to hand this country over to that crazy Austrian”. Chapter 1. This quote us said by Alfon’s grandfather during the first chapter. This quote is important because in the beginning before the war and holocaust the people of Germany where extremely happy with Hitler's choices that helped improve Germany’s economy and also lower the percentage of unemployment. These changes happened as a result of the start of World War two. Alfon’s grandfather appreciated the changes that were helping the country but he could see what was really going to happen because he could see through the lines.

Stereotyping.) In the first chapter we start to see jewish people being hated or persecuted because of their religion. Alfon’s teacher Herr Becker tells the students of the class that you shouldn’t trust a jew and that they should not be considered friends of the state. Hitler spoke of this and because he was thought of as a figure of power his people trusted him and the people of Germany started to hate the followers of the Jewish religion. This book goes back and forth because it is told from two different people and perspectives so the person who is reading it should have an interest in both parts of the story. They should be able to understand what is happening on both ends, from one extreme to the other and they should be able to read the story as if they were in that person’s shoes. Parallel Journeys is scary and frightening so I recommend this book to a person who can continue reading even after something terrible happens. Since this book was written in the time frame of the 1940’s the person reading should know that it isn’t really recent. This book is a great
