If you lost your identity in life, how would you identify yourself? What frame of reference would you have? How would you decide whom you will become and what would inspire you to define who you will choose to be? These are all decisions that Lexi must learn to endure. In the book, “My Life in Black and White” by Natasha Friend, the protagonist Lexi takes a new approach to life as she learns there is more to herself than what she thinks. She comes to realize that life is filled with many challenges. Once known as the pretty, popular and outgoing teenager, suddenly she finds that life has changed and not for the better. Lexi claims her life is not what is used to be as she struggles with the events of her former past. A common teenage pronouncement is claimed to be spoken as Lexi believes her life is now over. As Lexi struggles to remember the events that shaped who she was and who she wanted to be, she learns new things about herself that begin to take shape. After a series of unfortunate and challenging events, Lexi realizes she is lucky to be alive. For Lexi knows the only reason she is in the hospital, was because of Taylor and what she thought was a perfect night. While Taylor’s brother Jarrod is throwing a senior party for the new school year, Lexi and Taylor attend not knowing what might end up happening. “ In a single night, two things happened that would change the course of my life forever” (Friend 11). At this point in the story, we are told that in life things will occur that can change a person’s image on the outside, but what really stays the same is the person you are on the inside. For we do not learn who Lexi can become if she has the pretty girl image. Lexi has been labeled as the “pretty one” ever since she was in elementary school, but it was not until high school when she smartened up are learned that certain labels we are given do not mean anything. Meanwhile, as flashbacks begin to occur, she tries to remember the night of the party. She soon realizes she has no recollections of the events that occurred that evening, it still remains a complete mystery. While Lexi is in the hospital she is looking to pass the time, she imagines the events the night of the party, and can only envision “Taylor and Ryan, Taylor and Ryan, Taylor and Ryan” (Friend 39). Lexi accepts her new life. While in the hospital, she agonizes that every day will remain the same as she struggles to remember knowing that her memory will continue to fail her. Lexi soon begins to
