Have you ever had that embarrassing moment when reading in front of class and you do not know a word? That happened to me all too often when I was younger and still occasionally happens to me. Through this paper you will see the times when I struggled and the times when I succeeded in my literacy ability. Literacy has begun to come easier for me but I still struggle and through this paper you will find a time when I struggled and how teachers have taught me how to succeed through perseverance. In fifth grade, I began to go to an educational support room during language arts time. I would go to Mrs. Groot with another student in my class named Abby. Groot’s room, during language arts time, I began to feel safe with my literacy ability. If a fellow classmate asked me where I would go during language arts time, I would tell them to Mrs. Groot’s room. Nobody really questioned or asked anymore questions. I knew going to Mrs. Groot’s room was helping me understand what I was learning, but more importantly, the learning was going at a pace that was right for me. Seeing Mrs. Groot was the start of something that would further shape my literacy development. In my mind, the years following my time with Mrs. Groot were full of success for reading and writing. Middle school and high school still provided opportunities for me to go to another room during study hall time. The time that I had with Mrs. Groot brought to my attention that I needed to spend more time on assignments and that it is ok to struggle. Just because I am different than the normal students, does not mean that I can not succeed. I still am capable of doing the same work or as good a job as my peers. Just like the monarch butterfly, my literacy development started off just like a little caterpillar. Through my middle school and high school year my literacy development began to grow. Just like the monarch butterflies that I watched when I was younger grow up, I have now watched my literacy ability grow up and change. To conclude, I may have struggled and still struggle with my literacy ability but I can still do the work set out for me. It may take me longer to do but I can still do it. Mrs. Groot really help me with setting the ground work for my literacy ability and through middle school and high school my teacher helped me start to build up my literacy ability. Literacy is around us every day and through more exposure it has helped me become a better student and a better citizen in our
