I have deep interests in worker’s rights, labor laws, public policy, and social justice initiatives in the workplace. These topics excite me because moving forward in these areas improves the personal lives of workers, workplace relations, and communities. My participation in debate club, Model U.S. Senate, the National Student Leadership Convention (NSLC) Political Action & Public Policy Program, and the Envision Intensive Law & Trial Program have shown me how important it is to research and discuss these issues from numerous viewpoints. I currently serve as president of my current high school’s debate club. Through stimulating conversations, debate club has increased my interests in exploring all sides of a topic and has provided me the confidence to speak up and be a leader, even in controversy.
My summer enrichment programs, NSLC and Envision, provided me with simulation experiences for both mock trial and mock Senate procedures and were intensive weeks of law practices and bill formulations that boosted my love for law and public policy. If given the chance, I would love to be a research fellow for The Worker Institute at Cornell and have the opportunity to research social justice issues in the workplace, including discrimination due to sex, ethnicity, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion and national origin. Research with this institute would give me a deeper understanding of the inequalities of wealth, power, and opportunity in the labor market today caused by barriers placed on workers, making them lose their voice when it comes to disputes in problem-solving.
