There are many methods psychologists use in today’s world to measure personality. The most popular and the most widely used method is personality tests. Personality tests are “structured psychological tests that use formal methods of assessing personality” (Nevid, 2015, p. 434). The personality tests that we had to take was the Myers-Briggs personality test. Myers-Briggs is a self-report personality inventory which is a “structured psychological test in which individuals are given a set of questions to answer about themselves in the form of “yes-no,” “true-false,” or “agree-disagree” types of response formats (Nevid, 2015, p. 435). However, they should be used for support and not the main deal breaker for hiring someone. This test will help them have an idea of the employee’s personality and behavior but not their actual profile. Sometimes these tests can be inaccurate so they would have the wrong impression of someone. It will help them find an ideal person for the job or search for the ideal personality they want the employee to have. However, if they base their judgment on one particular test then they may not hire the right person. For advantages, this test will help you learn more about yourself. It will bring awareness to your strengths, weaknesses, and how you perform professionally and socially. It will also help you develop your strengths and work on your weaknesses. These tests may be more accurate than talking to an interviewer for “people may also be more willing to disclose personal information on paper-and-pencil tests than when facing an interviewer” (Nevid, 2015, p. 436). This test may be used to discover the different personality types and “to predict a wide range of behaviors, including the ability to relate effectively to others and to achieve positions of leadership or dominance” (Nevid, 2015, p. 436). For disadvantages, the test results may not be accurate and the tester may misinterpret himself. They might try to change themselves to fit the description of the type instead of being their own selves. If their dream job was not listed in the potential career section, they may stop pursuing their goal of obtaining that job. Test results may also be inaccurate if people lie about their answers. “Some responses may be outright lies. Others may be prone to more subtle distortions, such as tendencies to respond in a socially desirable direction” (Nevid, 2015, p. 436). Since people may lie and be bias towards their answers, personality tests will not always be 100%
