The bombing was unexpected and sadly hit Mada-Jan and Habib, her newborn brother. Najmah had to view the trauma and was deeply mortified. She would not talk or do anything she was in shock. “Instead of words, blood pours from her mouth. Habib lies motionless...”(Staples 67). After seeing her family die she would not and could not talk. She was so traumatized by this horrible event that she could not communicate.. Even while she is with the new family she tries to show how grateful she is for their kindness and protection but cannot form the words. “I try to communicate, but although the words form inside my head, my tongue and lips will not cooperate. I try to show that I am grateful by helping with the little boys and the animals”(Staples 88).
