(MIP-1) In this book the two main characters suffer through loss and these losses result in PTSD.

(SIP-A) Early on in the book Najmah losses her brother and father to the taliban, then she losses her newborn brother and mother to an american bombing. (STEWE-1) One day the Taliban visit her small town. The Taliban took all of the boys and men to fight. Najmah’s mom had her son and husband taken. After they were taken Mada-Jan didn’t try to take care of herself, she just cried and cried. She did not even eat. “She doesn’t eat, or sleep, or talk, or wipe the tears away. She seems to barely breathe”(Staples 30). Her mother was depressed and almost gave up. That would kill her and the baby. The bombing was unexpected and sadly hit Mada-Jan and Habib, her newborn brother. Najmah had to view the trauma and was deeply mortified. She would not talk or do anything she was in shock. “Instead of words, blood pours from her mouth. Habib lies motionless...”(Staples 67). After seeing her family die she would not and could not talk. She was so traumatized by this horrible event that she could not communicate.. Even while she is with the new family she tries to show how grateful she is for their kindness and protection but cannot form the words. “I try to communicate, but although the words form inside my head, my tongue and lips will not cooperate. I try to show that I am grateful by helping with the little boys and the animals”(Staples 88). Najmah would try to form words and communicate with the new family but it was almost as though she did not have a voice. (SIP-B) Nusrat losses her sister early on in her life due to an illness.
