Not everyone can claim that they have changed the course of history as much as Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon, a very short but powerful leader, ruled France from 1804 to 1814. During his reign he was able to conquer multiple countries and install many beneficial plans and system for France. These acts however has created a huge rift in Napoleon’s image. He is either viewed as a hero or tyrant. Napoleon is hero because he was able to restore the church, fix France’s economic problem, and create free education.
Religion plays a large role in many people’s lives. Before Napoleon came into power the church was in absolute ruins and had no position in France. He was able to restore the church through the concordat. The concordat was an agreement between Napoleon and Pope Pius VII. He did this by setting up an efficient method of tax collection and establishing a national banking system. These renovations within France also promoted careful financial management and superior control of the economy. If Napoleon never fixed the economy, he would have never had the money to wage all of his future wars. This would have changed the history of multiple European countries and the lives of millions of people.
The third reason Napoleon is a hero is because he created free education. He offered this education through lycées, or government-run public schools. These schools were open to males of any backgrounds and males who graduated were given a position in public office based on merit instead of family connections.
