Napoleon, our Hero
Napoleon Bonaparte has achieved many great things for our nation, in such a short amount of time. There are some that say that this has all been gained through the tyranny of his rule, however I believe that he has made progress for the better of France. While he may have limited freedom of speech and press, he has kept the ideals of France by establishing a strong government and steadying the financial crisis caused by the tyrannical King Louis.
Napoleon has been very efficient in keeping the ideals of the Revolution, especially when it came to government. For one, he has finally established a set of rules with clearly defined crimes and punishments, called the Napoleonic Code. I just wish the Committee of Public Safety had done something like this, since we ended up beheading many innocent people over “crimes” that they committed. With this, he has created a safe nation. Remember the heavy taxes that those bloody noblemen imposed on us just so they could live a fancy life? Well, Napoleon has changed that by changing them to a reasonable price! Now we can have food on our tables and a roof over our heads, and the government has money to make France all the better. And we can be certain that our money is in well hands, since they are clearly chosen because of their merit. Also, while he has agreed to sell our lands in the New World to the Americans, think about the benefits. First, France gained 15 million dollars! Also, Napoleon himself has said, “The sale assures forever the power of the United States, and I have given England a rival who, sooner or later, will humble her pride” (McDougal Littell 231).
