In George Orwell's Animal Farm, Napoleon, a pig leader that represents Stalin from the Russian Revolution plays a big role in the book as the pig leaders are a superior group among the population of Animal Farm. In the story Napoleon is representing Stalin in Animal Farm as the main leader after Mr.Jones is ran out of the farm and Old Major died, resembling how Stalin took over rising to power in Russia. Napoleon started as a seemingly good leader but that soon changed… Napoleon, just like Stalin started to have problems with citizens of their own community and tried to hurt people and take things away. Both leaders can be shown using their superiority and power to their advantage to get everything they wanted and felt was necessary.

Napoleon initially unifies with the rest of the animal’s, but soon decides to take matters into his own hands and disposes of Snowball and his proposals towards the farm. He takes advantage of the vulnerable animals so he can become in command. Napoleon is clever, brutal, and dictatorial to the animals.
In the novel, Animal Farm, by George Orwell, a lot of the strategies that Stalin used are similar to the strategies that Napoleon used. Napoleon is a prime example of how absolute power corrupts absolutely because he used his knowledge and power to take over the farm. Stalin and Napoleon were very powerful people who had a lot of influence over the people and animals. “It was only in 1929 that Stalin gained the power to announce his ‘Great Break’ of forced industrialization, class war against the upper peasantry, and collectivization.” ("The black swan of the Russian revolution.
Lord Acton, the British historian, once said, “All power tends to corrupt, absolute power corrupts absolutely.” In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, the character Napoleon puts himself in charge. But, not only that he allows another pig, Squealer, to do his dirty work. And also uses dogs to chase his enemy, Snowball, away . In which leads to other animals not knowing that the farm is being ran the same way as when under Mr. Jones, the old farmer 's, control.
The animals start recognizing Napoleon for any good achievement done that day. For example, one of the hens recognizes Napoleon for just one stroke of good fortune. “Under the leadership of our Leader Comrade Napoleon, I have laid five eggs in six days…”(78). These poor animals are tricked into thinking that everything good that happens is due to “Comrade Napoleon's Leadership”. Every quote we see is a deeper level of corruption in Napoleon, and now, his influence on the farm is tearing what the revolution was all about.
Old Major, an old and respected boar, gave a speech of his dream of the animal’s rebellion against man shortly before his death. He stated, “Even when we have conquered him, do not adopt his vices.” Farmer Jones, the animals’ owner, was very abusive and gave his animals common “floggings” if work was not done properly. They not only were whipped often, but they also received very little food rations. The animals recognized that the men were all getting the best of things doing minimal work while the animals were also working very hard for the comfort of the humans.
Trying to gain freedom on the farm, the animals obtain a leader, Napoleon, who is much more harsh and stern than the former farm owner, Mr. Jones, has ever been. Symbolizing a ruler from the Soviet Union, Joseph Stalin, Napoleon brings the farm into a hole, they have a hard time getting out of. Napoleon kills various animals, and has also broken the Seven commandments the animals promise to abide by. In the beginning, the farm was run by Mr. Jones, who is later overpowered by the animals on the farm. To gain power, Napoleon starts to earn their trust by making it seem as if he is a trustworthy comrade.
This helps Napoleon to stay in power because the animals are thinking if they listen to him then Jones will not come back. The animals are scared of Jones because he was not feeding them so they really don’t want him to come back. That is how Napoleon cast fear over the animals so he can stay in power. “Power is the ability to do something or act in a particular way, especially as a faculty or quality” (Google definition). A leader’s power can affect the well-being of the community and this power could be used in a good or a bad way such as dictatorship. In North Korea, Kim Jong-un abuses his power of being a leader by forcing brutal labor among the people of North Korea which has caused death and starvation. In the novel, Animal Farm, by George Orwell, Napoleon uses his power as a leader when he manipulate others, enforces hard labor, and benefits himself and the other pigs which all affect the other animals’ well beings.
When first reading George Orwell’s Animal Farm, one might assume it to be a simple narrative about Farm Animals. However, through closer analysis, you begin to see the allegorical connections and satire of the work. By drawing parallels to certain major events and individuals from the Russian Revolution, Orwell is able to provide a political commentary about the harsh conditions caused by the Revolution. In George Orwell 's Animal Farm, he uses Napoleon, Snowball, and Mr. Jones to show the allegorical connections, as well as its satirical motives.
Animal Farm- Lies and Deceit The book Animal Farm by George Orwell portrays the theme of how someone can lie and deceive others to get what they want just like how the two pigs Napoleon and Squealer used lies and deceit to gain power over Animal Farm. Napoleon lied to other animals, Squealer lied to other animals and they both deceived the other animals, but the sad part is that neither of them lied for the better of the other animals. They both lied to get what they want- power over the animals and the farm.
In Animals Farm, there is a pig who’s name Napoleon. This character did not contributed to the society with his actions. In effect, he did not respect the concept of “Animalism” which is the equality of all the animals. He did many actions that broke this conception during the entire story. At the beginning, Napoleon, take the farm with Snowball when the farmer, Mr. Jones, left.
In the final analysis, Napoleon is a worse leader than Jones due to his executing, starving the animals, and disobeying the commandments. Napoleon was inconsiderate for killing an incredible amount of animals and treating them like objects. As Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin and Snowball, Leon Trotsky, it is natural that these two pigs have different personalities. Napoleon is a more fierce-looking character than Snowball, who is known to get his own way. Snowball, in the other hand, is more vivacious and talkative than Napoleon. These two pigs have different views over the Seven Commandments and how other animals should be governed and treated. Besides their differences, we can say that both Napoleon and Snowball wanted the rebellion to happen and supported the idea of Animalism and, consequently, the expurgation of humans from the power.
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. ”(Page 97) In this case, George Orwell is using the phrase “more equal” to show how leaders twist words in order to manipulate the population. Animal Farm, by George Orwell, is a classic satire on the Russian Revolution. Satire is a way to use humor, irony, or over exaggeration to expose or criticize people’s ideas, especially in politics.
