The beginning of the 16th century brought with it the Reformation. The Catholic Church became challenged by Martin Luther and John Calvin. With nailing of the 95 theses on the Church doors, Luther began the Protestant Reformation. The counter-reformation was introduced in Europe to weaken the Protestant Reformation and rebuild the power of the Catholic Church through education, clergy reform, and spreading of the Catholic faith. The counter-reformation can be additionally seen as a political movement because of the loss in revenue in the Baltic provinces.

The Protestent Reformation changed how people saw religion from the words of the Pope and Council, but also showed how the printing press spread the word of the Bible. The lower levels of hierarchy and the towns outside reach of the Bible were given the word of God and this shaped what is now known as Christianity. From the words of Martin Luther, a German priest, the Pope and Council altered God’s words, but how did this cycle back into the hardships the people faced in these times? Martin Luther, a German priest, author, and professor, brought up a valuable question.
The Protestant Reformation broke out in Germany in the beginning of 1517. The Church and the Pope began to lose power and authority and people began to question the teachings and ways of the Catholic Church. Ideas of new religions, such as Protestant, Lutheran, and Calvinists, started to spread throughout Europe. The Church was corrupt and started to lose followers. These problems led to people speaking out against the Church and it became a revolution of political and religious debates.
The Reformation was a time in Europe in the 1500s in which people questioned the beliefs of the Catholic Church. There were many changes made by the catholic church. The people that were responsible were Martin Luther, John Calvin and King Henry VIII. The fact that these Reformers stuck to their beliefs even when people were being banished for their Protestant views was further evidence that these people of the Reformation had strong beliefs in it. “Between 1525 and 1535 a number of English reformers were living in exile in Europe, unwelcome in Henrician England.” Youth who did not truly believe in the Reformation would not have had this type of commitment. This type of commitment would only lie in the hearts of people who truly believed in what they were reforming. Reflecting back to what was pointed out earlier, the reformers had goals for the future of the church and society.
The Protestant Reformation, a period of change and strife, has significantly influenced the modern world socially, politically and economically. The Protestant Reformation began in the 16th century and was a major movement that aimed to reform the Roman Catholic Church, its beliefs and practices. The idea of Reformation began when people realised the extent of problems within the church. For example: the selling of indulgences, Papal Schism and open political struggles caused problems with Catholic Church’s public image. Martin Luther played a major role in the Reformation, and was responsible for the 1517 release of the 95 Theses. From a social aspect, the Reformation put emphasis on education, leading to more informed and knowledgeable people.
Losing the Faith? During difficult times, many people turn to their faith in order to help themselves deal with the situation that they are going through. However, difficult times may cause people to stray away from their faith or forget about their beliefs all together. In “Sinners in The Hands of an Angry God”, Johnathan Edwards uses fear to create images that help his audience experience the consequences of sinful behavior. He uses imagery and figurative language to persuade his readers. He wants us to get a mental picture of Hell in your head and he wants us to fear the wrath of God. One such image was when Edward wrote, “When men are on god’s hands and they could fall to Hell, natural men are held in the hands of God, over the pit of Hell.” God could let us fall into the eternity of burning flames anytime He wants to.
John Calvin was born on July 10, 1509, in Noyon, Picardy, France; he was known for being the most important figure while leading the second generation of the Protestant Reformation. He was born into a middle-class family, his father worked as a lay Administrator under the Bishop. While under the service of the Bishop they sent him to the University of Paris in 1523 to become educated on becoming a priest, but decided to become a lawyer in 1528, therefore, Calvin studied in Orleans and Bourges law schools. During these years of his life he was greatly exposed to Renaissance humanism, which was enforced by Jacques Lefèvre d’Étaples and Erasmus; This constituted to the profound youth movement of the time. Calvin influenced Protestantism all around Europe and in North America by the
John Calvin John Calvin was an important aspect in the reformation for multiple reasons one being that he was a leading figure by publishing the Institutes of the Christian Religion which he hoped to regulate Protestantism. He also became a valued spiritual and political leader in which he put together a religious government. Later given absolute supremacy as the leader in Geneva. He was a man who instituted numerous positive policies. He did a superb job of what he was trying to accomplish, he banned all art other than music which ended up creating Geneva the center of Protestantism, which is what he was shooting for initially.
John Calvin is considered one of the most important people in regards to the Protestant Reformation during the early-mid 1500’s. He was a pastor that took his job seriously and wanted to influence people to go beyond conformity and to try to grasp who God truly is, not just who others preached that He is. He encouraged thinking, not conformity. This new ideology, of course, brought about conflict between the widely prevalent Roman Catholicism of that day and Calvin’s personal conviction. The doctrinal differences mentioned in the prayers were part of that conflict.
Rhetorical Analysis of Jonathan edwards’s Sinners in the hand of an angry god: jeremiad Jonathan edwards, is known as one of the most important religious figures of the great awakening, edwards became known for his zealous sermon “sinners at the hand of an angry god”. During his sermon he implies that if his congregation does not repent to christ they are in “danger of great wrath and infinite misery”. Throughout this sermon edwards uses literary devices such as strong diction, powerful syntax and juxtaposition to save his congregation from eternal damnation. Throughout Edwards’s sermon the use of turgid diction is exceedingly prevalent.
Various religions have made a great turning point on European history. One of the most notable figures of European history, a German theologian and religious reformer named Martin Luther, had so much passion about his faith of God. This man leaves a mark on European history for having the courage to lead a revolution against the Catholic Church. He felt that the Catholic Church’s practices were impractical. Martin Luther made a great, positive impact as a religious leader during the Protestant Reformation by his successful achievements as a theologian, starting and spreading the Protestant Reformation to many parts in Europe, and creating his own Lutheran Church.
The Canterbury Tales, by Geoffrey Chaucer, reveals that religion does not make moral individuals. Chaucer goes on about telling how several of the characters on the pilgrimage had questionable lifestyles yet the characters were taking part in a religious journey. Religion can only influence a moral character but does not make its followers untouchable to the imperfections found on earth. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer’s character, The Pardoner, is a church official who altered the peoples mind by cheating the people into believing any nonsense.
