Despite the title of the book, “My Antonia” is very much centered on Jim Burden. The story begins with an outlook on Jim’s adult life, and we are then catapulted into his Nebraskan childhood. As the book progresses, we witness the mental and emotional development of Jim as he has new experiences and meets numerous people. The book then concludes with Jim again as an adult. As a reader, I have observed him complete a cycle (going from point a, to point b and arriving at point a again).

Another example that does not help the author’s main point was when he talk about the Asian kids for being smart. Rodriguez mentions “But if Asians tend to annoy us for being so family oriented, they are also stereotypically celebrated as the new ‘whiz kids’ in school” (261). He assumes that Asians tend to be categorized as smart people just because their parents think of their values as getting good grades and becoming a doctor. Although the authors use of stereotypical examples were not good to prove his claims, majority of the authors points backed up his main idea very well.

After meeting her friend, Ellen Gates Starr (which happens to be me) Jane went about searching for a position in life.

This is also used to speed the pace and rhythm of the phrase to increase the anger and passion she has towards people who want to assimilate her society to be like everyone else. Growing up as a woman has been quite difficult in this generation, however, growing up around thirty years ago must have been more difficult. Back in the 1900’s, women had different social norms to deal with in society. Women had to stay at home, be housewives, do the laundry, and cook while men went out and worked to obtain money for their family. In Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, she tells the struggles that women went through back in the 1990 's and the social norms that women had to go through. Chopin addresses many instances of symbolism to portray the feeling Mrs. Mallard has about her own thoughts and experiences with or without a man in her life.
