The literacy
My life experience with literacy and my literacy sponsors
I may not be able to remember the first letter I learned in my life, I barely remember the first word I wrote. The first literacy sponsor I had in my life were my eyes. They were captivated onto adult’s actions: the way they read, wrote, signed papers, and typed on keyboards. The first thing I remember is that we lived in a different city on the east side of Saudi Arabia, Dammam. I was born in Dammam and stayed there until third grade. My family moved to the capital city Riyadh making Arabic my first language. Arabic is way different than English. The alphabet, the grammar is different. So I have been taught Arabic as first language for twelve years. First it was how to read and write then I learned how to write a complete sentence till we get to the point when we were able to write and read poems. English is my second language. I have been learning English since first grade, but it was a second language, what makes it difficult for me. We use to have only three English classes a week. And we never practiced it at home or somewhere else. I mostly learned English in the USA.

I always had so much homework, which I hated. I always struggled with witting and reading; although, my favorite teacher taught that class. He pushed me to practice my literacy. I had four different Arabic classes for different language skills. One is for writing where we wrote and developed creative writing, we had a reading class where we learned how to read and pronounce words, we had a grammar class, and we had another writing class where we copied what our teacher read for us.
