Not often does disappointment turn into excitement. A brief trip to Rainy River with my father and his friends was certainly a transition from disappointment to excitement. My father indirectly demonstrated lessons during this trip that will remain with me endlessly.
We drove to Rainy River because we heard the walleye bite was hot. It was the end of March, and we were anxious to get on the water again. My father and I were hoping we would catch some walleyes to eat while we waited for the regular fishing season to open. Hammer, Christian, and Scott also came with us to catch some walleye. We were all hoping my father would catch a memorable birthday fish. As we trolled down Rainy River, the cold brisk air filled our lungs with each breath. The boat rocked back and forth with every wave rolling underneath it. The waves that rolled underneath the boat showered us with an awakening mist. My father was steering the boat with one hand and jigging with the other, all the while ensuring we didn’t float over to the Canadian side of the river. He is truly who I look up to every day. On our Rainy River trip, my father taught me to be relentless and to love others. I assume that most people would simply pick up and leave when told the bite is no longer hot, but my father did just the opposite. Giving up is not in my father’s dictionary. He continues to strive for his goals even when all odds are against him. The number of times my father has stopped to talk to a stranger is exorbitant. No matter where we are, my father is finding someone new to talk to and learning about them. This is how my father shows love to others.
