My life has been dominated by serious injuries, taking me out of play for months at a time. Not one year ago I was stuck in a cast that covered my whole leg, causing me to miss out on all the fun of winter. Naturally, I became very upset when a minor injury made me miss out on my biggest sports opportunity of my life. I have had this injury multiple times in the past, and this game was the last straw that broke the camel’s back.
I was playing a game with my select team, Panathinaikos FC, and we were down 2-1 in the quarter final match of the spring invitational tournament. I somehow managed to score off of a corner from more than 10 yards outside the box, a shot most people could only dream of scoring. My teammates piled on top of me, raised me on their shoulders, and before I knew it, I was the king of the world. I tied the game. I scored an impossible goal. It was too good to be true. The horrible thing was: it really was too good to be true. We still only had 5 minutes to score another goal, and both teams had the same

He told me it sounded worse than it actually was, and I believed him. I felt no pain whatsoever while I was lying still. I told this to the medic and said, “Why can’t I play if I don’t feel the pain?” I realized why as soon as I tried to jog. My leg flared with pain, and then I realized that I was going to miss out on the biggest game of my life. I was devastated. My team was counting on me, and all I could do was sit on the bench and refill the water bottles. I realized with a jolt that this was the same injury that occurred in the fall of 9th grade during a match against Lutheran North. “So stupid,” I thought, “to not let this heal properly.” I then made a vow: I would never let any injury, no matter how small, go unnoticed. It was through my reckless behavior that I lost the opportunity to play in the finals, and I would never let this happen
