One ethical dilemma that I am concerned about is having dual and multiple relationships with my clients. I live in a very rural community where there are not many social work agencies. In my town, there is one school system, few grocery stores and churches, one gym to workout at, and very few restaurants to choose from. If you live in this area, you typically know most of, the people here. Everyone knows each other, and if you don’t know someone, then somebody knows something about you. I have the fear that I will go to the same church, grocery store, and gym as my client does. I’m also concerned that my future children will attend the same school as my client’s children. This theory is based on natural laws, common sense, intuition, and duties. This theory considers the greatest good for the greatest number. It judges morality of action based on adherence to rules. It informs you to follow the rules, because the rules bind you to your duty. In an ethical dilemma, this theory is used to emphasize motive. In dual and multiple relationships, I would follow the NASW code of ethics standards for dealing with this issue. I would also seek out any agency policy on dual relationships. If my client were to seek out a relationship outside of the office, I would use this theory to seek out their motive for wanting the relationship. I feel that it is my duty as a social worker to inform them in the beginning of the therapeutic relationship of the boundaries set by our profession. It states “the right to privacy of clients and others should be enhanced however possible and in accordance with laws. However, it may be necessary to break confidentiality when serious harm or death to clients or others may result from maintaining such confidentiality” (Rothman, 2013). By following this principle, I would make my clients aware of the privacy and confidentiality policy regarding the information shared.
