DETERMINE whether there is an ethical issue or/and dilemma. 2. IDENTIFY the key values and principles involved. 3. RANK the values or ethical principles which - in your professional judgment - are most relevant to the issue or dilemma. 4. DEVELOP an action plan that is consistent with the ethical priorities that have been determined as central to the dilemma. 5. When social workers must make an ethical decision they speak of both the NASW Code of Ethics and the IFSW/ IASSW Ethics in Social Work, Statement of Principles to help them along the way. The NASW Code of Ethics makes available specific ethical principles with large ethical responsibilities to groups and individuals. The IFSW/IASSW Ethics in Social Work, Statement of Principles provides social workers with generalized principals, and federal standards of effective practices. This also includes conventions of human rights that are upheld by the social work community. By using both NASW Code of Ethics and IFSW/ IASSW Ethics in Social Work, Statement of Principal codes social workers can distinguish the strengths of each of these codes.
